S M A L L - G R O U P C L A S S E S
Group sessions are 25 minutes long, and are focused on reading support or French oral expression. Students are grouped based on their reading level or the type support needed. Small groups are capped at 4 students to ensure personalized support.
Why group tutoring?
In my 5 years as a teacher and 9 years as a tutor, I have worked with over 250 children and have made wonderful connections with students and families. In French Immersion, students are learning their second (or third!) language. As a teacher, I have often noticed students making the same types of errors and struggling with the same handful of problems when it comes to reading, oral expression, and comprehension. Our focused sessions allows us to target key elements in the French language; multiple sessions per week allow us to build on this foundation and apply our learning to different contexts.
Our group model integrates academic elements (such as reading, comprehension, oral language expression) interspersed with short S.E.L. practices. In a small group, students are able to listen and learn from each other, not just the teacher. When needed or desired, a student can take a step back from the limelight and quietly observe. This small group format also provides students with the opportunity to share when they make a connection. Sessions are short and engaging. Some sessions are anchored in reading strategies to decode and understand a story; others play games to support the development of phonological awareness; others work at communicative capacity through games and guided storytelling. Specific content is tailored to each group based on their academic goals.
