Understanding Silent Letters in French
Understanding Silent Letters in French
French has a lot of silent letters.
...And I mean a LOT.
Our kids are used to seeing 's' at the end of a word, and don't pronounce it - especially in words they already know.
But what about words like:
le sirop, le renard, les nids
This mini-course walks you through the rule for what letters are silent at the end of a word.
This course is different as it is made for you to learn with your child!
There's a quick parent video at the beginning of the unit, so you know what to print and what you'll be learning. It will take less than 15 minutes to have everything you need ready for 1-2 week's worth of content.
After that - everything you do with your child! Watch the short lesson, then play the game to target what you've just learned.
If you'd like, delve into the included bonus material to get an even more in depth look at the concept learned - perfect for older learners who know word pronunciation through trial and error, but don't completely know the rule.
To use this course, you (and your child) only need to know the French alphabet.
All words are decodable (so there are no 'eau' or 'in' thrown in!)

FAQ:
What level of student is this mini-course made for?
The minimum requirement for this course is that students already know the alphabet sounds and can blend sounds together.
For the most part, this course is taken by students in K-3 French Immersion. However, it is beneficial to any student who doesn't know the rules yet and is ready to stop relying on guessing and memorization to pronounce words. Older students are able to work through the material faster, but benefit greatly from learning the rules so that French makes sense!
How long does it take to complete?
The core concept (covered in lesson 1+2) can be completed in one week. The bonus materials provided provide enough practise for another 1-2 weeks, if desired.
This assumes practising at home 3-4 times a week, 15-25 minutes per session.
How is the course structured?
At the beginning, there is a quick parent intro, which includes: a short video of what to expect in the unit, pages to print, and a parent reference sheet of the rule learned.
Lesson 1 introduces the new concept in a short video; for example, what letters are silent at the end of a word. After this, there is a game to practise words ONLY containing this pattern.
Lesson 2 starts with a video to quickly review the main concept. This lesson is the most important one as your child decides if the rule applies to each word. Sirop ? Tapis ? Arc ? Play the game to deepen your understanding!
There are also bonus materials included that vary based on the unit covered. They sometimes include: supports to help writing, exceptions to the rule, and advanced grammar lessons! Although it's optional, we always include sentence practise.
